What is yeast?
Yeast infections are caused by the development of a fungus, typically found in moist or wet environments. A yeast infection in the male groin is known as jock itch, while yeast on the feet and toes is referred to as athlete’s foot. These are all the same type of yeast, just located on various parts of the body. For most women, the vagina maintains a certain level of acidity that can keep yeast from growing, but when conditions are right, it cannot control the yeast levels and they may continue to rise. Yeast will grow and women may experience a variety of problems including:
- Itching and irritation in the vaginal area
- Redness and swelling of the vaginal tissues and vulva
- Vaginal rash
- Pain and soreness
- Burning while urinating or during intercourse
- White, thick discharge or watery discharge
